Overview
The Foundation has long had an interest in the area of access to justice. Our current objectives in this area are:
- to promote developments in the legal system that will improve its accessibility to all people;
- to promote wider access to legal services and advice and a better understanding of the obstacles to access to justice;
- to fund research and promote developments in alternative dispute resolution;
- to help promote a greater knowledge of the rights and duties of the individual, including those of the European citizen;
- to examine the implications of new human rights' obligations on civil (not criminal) justice;
- to help promote a greater public understanding of the role of law in society and of the legal system.
Replacement or core funding of existing services (such as law centres) will not be considered. Projects on penal policy, drugs, policing, crime prevention, criminal or environmental law will not normally be supported under the 'Access to justice' area of special interest unless they fulfil one of the objectives set out above. Applications are subject to the general Foundation exclusions.
Please note:
In all its areas of interest the Foundation is interested in supporting work that has an international comparative dimension and is particularly interested in fostering work that considers European perspectives.
The Foundation does not make grants for the funning costs of voluntary bodies but will consider making a contribution to voluntary sector overheads on funded projects.
