Developing Tomorrow’s Leading Social Science Researchers

The New Career Development Fellowship Scheme aims to promote excellence in UK social science research capacity. The Scheme is designed to foster the leading intellectual social scientists of tomorrow, working on research projects concerned with issues of serious social significance.

This is not a conventional post-doctoral Fellowship Scheme:

• The Fellowships support post-doctoral social scientists who have the potential to become outstanding in their field.

• Awards are made for research projects on issues of social significance developed and carried out in partnership with an experienced social scientist; the active participation of the experienced partner is a key element of the Fellowship.

• The Scheme offers post-doctoral Fellows with independent ideas and questioning minds the opportunity to take a ‘change of direction’ – e.g. the acquisition of a substantive new body of knowledge, methodology or skill.

• The Scheme supports partnerships, projects and career development additional to those that would take place anyway.

There are revised guidelines and a shorter decision timetable for this programme to encourage high quality applications and, specifically, applications from committed and involved experienced partners. Good quality applications have a high chance of success.

Awards are up to £170,000 over three years; experienced partners may claim up to £25,000. Trustees will make up to four awards.

The closing date for outline applications is 1st September 2008. Award decisions will be made in March 2009.

Please note that it is possible that there will be no call for NCDF applications in 2009, as the scheme will be under review. That may result in changes to the scheme from 2010 onwards. Please check this website for future news.
